Today was the last game of the 2004-2005 season, with Macclesfield Town needing one point to get into the promotion play-offs. In the first half we were rubbish – and this against Rushden, who are 22nd in the league. Brian Horton switched things around after the break, moving Kevin McIntyre into midfield and replacing him at left back with a proper defender, Matt Carragher. The transformation was instant, and very soon we were a goal up thanks to big Jon Parkin. After that we could have scored a hatful, but Rushden’s keeper Shearer made a string of marvellous reflex saves and so the score finished at 1-0. But that was enough to guarantee a two-leg play-off semi-final against Lincoln City, hopefully followed by a trip to the Cardiff Millennium Stadium to see off either Southend or Northampton. League One here we come!
